Chantique Carey-Payne was named the head coach of the Gryphons varsity swimming programs in June of 2017. Prior to being named head coach, Chantique spent two seasons serving as an assistant coach with the U of G swim teams.
As a swimmer, Payne was a four-year OUA All-Star during her time at the University of Guelph, and earned an impressive total of 11 OUA medals, and eight CIS medals. She is a seven-time OUA Gold medalist and in 2009-10 swam to a national title and First Team All-Canadian status in the 50m Butterfly.
In 2011 her career culminated in an impressive four national medals at the CIS Championships including a silver in the women's 50m butterfly, bronze in the 100m butterfly and a pair of bronze medals in the 50m and 100m freestyle. During her collegiate career, Payne set one OUA record in the 100m Butterfly in her fourth-year and holds three all-time Gryphon swimming records in the 50m, 100m and 200m Freestyle events. She also earned two bronze medals at the 2012 Summer Canadian Championships.
After swimming Payne turned her attention to coaching, and started as a full-time assistant coach with the Gryphons program during the 2015-16 season. In the last two years she has focused on growing her coaching career, learning all-facets of the program but specifically taking a lead on the dryland planning and implementation. She has also earned invaluable experience as the National Team Coach for the Canadian Lifesaving team this past year.
