Rec Basketball refers to dropāin time where participants play basketball in an “open play” format: pick-up games, multiple players, possibly some more informal competitive play, but still within the constraints of facility policies.
Skills Only – Basketball Time is designated specifically for drills, individual skill development (shooting, dribbling, footwork), rather than team games or full court scrimmages. This might mean fewer people and no full games, within the constraints of facility policies. It is reserved for players who want to work on their own or with a small group on skills, rather than competitive play. This was created out of a request from females and our youth who just wanted to shoot on the net and were being kicked off the courts in rec basketball time.
Key differences:
Purpose: Skills only = skill development, drills, individual or small group work; Rec Basketball = more general play, pick-up games, open use.
Format/regulation: Skills restrict full court, restrict number of players, restrict competitive games; Rec Basketball may allow more players, more game-type play.
Organized practice/coaching: For both, personal coaching / organized practice is not permitted during drop-in times. “Skills Only” is considered drop-in and the same restriction applies. Personal business cannot be conducted in any facilities.
Failure to follow these guidelines may result in removal from facility and/or loss of access privileges (starting at a minimum of a 4-month suspension and can be set as a longer suspension depending on the severity of the incident).
