Gryphon Hockey Skating & Skills Camp | All Genders Ages 8-13

Gryphon Camps offer a variety of camps that are categorized into Activity Camps or Sport Camps. Hockey sits within Sport Camps umbrella.

New Minimum/Maximum Age Requirements

Each camp has a minimum and maximum age requirement to ensure campers are grouped with others within the same age range.  If you have questions or concerns about age requirements, please contact the Gryphon Camps Office at camps@uoguelph.ca or 519-824-4120 Ext. 56131.

  • Minimum Age: Campers must be no younger than the minimum age or be turning that age by the upcoming September 1st. 
  • Maximum Age: Campers must be no older than the maximum age by the end of the calendar year (December 31st).  

Our Hockey Skating & Skills program will have 2 staff and 20 players (a ratio of 1:10)

Individual Focus

Players will be challenged no matter what their skill level as groups are determined by age and playing abilities.

Skills

1-hour and 20-minute on-ice sessions will focus on skating, puck handling, passing and shooting.

Previous hockey playing experience and full gear is required.

 Hockey - Skating & Skills | All Genders, Ages 8-10 (U11) &  11-13 (U14) 

This is a 1 hour and 20 minute daily session, focusing on general skating and puck skills. The camp is open to players of varying skill. The goal of the camp is to promote a fun, development focused environment, where players have an opportunity to develop their fundamental skills (skating, puck handling, passing, and shooting). Previous hockey playing experience and full
gear required.
 

Hockey - Skating & Skills Details

  • Specific areas of focus: power skating, stick handling, passing, game transferable drills and movements
  • Designed to challenge players at any skill level 
  • Goalies are encouraged to register although there will be no goalie specific training

 

EQUIPMENT

  • Appropriate hockey equipment is the responsibility of each participant, including goaltenders
  • Full gear must be worn for each on-ice session.

 

We have included the hockey-specific camps in our summer offerings that most suit the wide range of interest and ability of our campers. Our Men's & Women's Varsity coaches will be offering half-day training clinics for specific ages and skills. These will be offered the weeks of August 12th & August 19th.

This is a 1 hour and 20 minute daily session, focusing on general skating and puck skills. The camp is open to players of varying skill. The goal of the camp is to promote a fun, development focused environment, where players have an opportunity to develop their fundamental skills (skating, puck handling, passing, and shooting). Previous hockey playing experience and full gear required. Note: This is a four day program as there is no program on Monday Aug.5th (Civic Holiday)

Meet The Coach

JOSH DIXON HEAD COACH, UNIVERSITY OF GUELPH MEN'S HOCKEY 

  • 23 years of experience within the Canadian hockey sport system 
  • 9 years of experience coaching in the Canadian Hockey League (CHL), most recently with the Prince George Cougars (WHL) where he was the Associate Coach for the past two seasons. 
  • Previous CHL experience includes serving as Head Coach of the QMJHL's Saint John Sea Dogs (2017-19), Assistant Coach of the WHL's Swift Current Broncos (2014-2015) and Associate Coach with the WHL's Regina Pats (2011-2014).
  • He also has eight years of experience at the U SPORTS level, serving in Associate and Assistant Coach roles at Mount Royal University (2008-2010), the University of Calgary (2006-2008) and Carleton University (2002-2006).
  • His coaching experience also includes involvement with the Team Canada Program of Excellence, serving in roles as Head and Assistant Coach at the U16, U17 and U20 levels.
