Aquatic & Safety Certifications

COVID-19 Update July 15, 2020: Ontario prepares for Phase 2 (Stage 3)

All in-person Fitness & Recreation Programs originally planned to run in June, July and August continue to be cancelled.  Your health and wellness continue to be a priority for us, and we're excited to welcome you back soon. We are continuing to post daily workouts online free of charge. Participate in our 45 minute Gryphon fitness classes from our Fitness and Recreation Instagram account found here.  As restrictions from the provincial government and public health are communicated, we will provide updates regarding future programming.
 
Registrations will be automatically cancelled.  You do not need to withdraw or cancel your registration.
Any fees already paid will be refunded in full. Payments made by credit card will be automatically refunded to that card. If you paid for a registration with any other form of payment, you will receive an account credit that can be used to pay for future registrations.  For more information about recreation program credits and refunds, please email reghelp@uoguelph.ca

Additional fees are applicable and registration is required for the following Aquatic & Safety Certifications.  Athletics Base Membership is NOT required to register for Certification courses.

Emergency First Aid with CPR B (LSS)

This course is designed for individuals wanting to be certified in First Aid principles and the emergency treatment of injuries. Skills include; victim assessment, rescue breathing, CPR, choking, and what to do for external bleeding, heart attack, and stroke victims. All modules taught with the 2015 CPR guidelines.

Examiners Course (LSS)

The LSS Examiner Course is the first step in the three-step process to be appointed as an Examiner for the Lifesaving Society, and prepares candidates to successfully apprentice as an Examiner on an exam of their choice. The Examiner Course builds on the evaluation experience that candidates have attained in the instructor-evaluated content. Course Materials: Not Included. *Registration ends 1 day prior to start date.

First Aid Instructor (LSS)

This revised LSS First Aid Instructor course prepares candidates so they may teach Basic and Emergency First Aid, CPR A-B-C, AED, as well as, Standard First Aid. Prerequisite: LSS Standard First Aid with CPR C. *Registration ends 2 weeks prior to start date.

National Lifeguard

This 40-hour course fulfills a need for an advanced and recognized training standard for those charged with the safety of all persons in the swimming pool. Candidates will learn how to supervise swimmers, maintain a facility, control patrons, establish and enforce appropriate rules, educate patrons in the appropriate use of the facility, be skilled in the use of specialized rescue equipment, and to evaluate the facility operation making changes and improvements where necessary. *Registration ends 1 day prior to start date.

National Lifeguard Recertification

Effective May 1st, 2013, all NLS Recertification courses will be taught and evaluated following the Revised 2012 NLS Program. Evaluated items will include all 'management' items, lifeguarding situations and the following physical standards: endurance challenge, sprint challenge, object recovery. Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Recert

This WSI Recertification Course is designed to ensure that quality and standards are maintained in the Instructing field. Course will include Red Cross updates, skill & stroke evaluation, development and Instructor Emergency Response. Course fee includes; Water Safety Instructor Recertification Workbook.  *Registration ends 1 day prior to start date.

Standard First Aid with CPR C (LSS)

Lifesaving Society Standard First Aid with CPR C certification course covers a broad spectrum of first aid treatments for medical emergencies and injuries. This course will also cover situation management, use of bystanders, and legal implications. Participants will also perform CPR and choking procedures for Infant, Child and Adult victims. Please note according to WSIB standards, individuals who hold this certification must recertify the award every two years. The recertification process requires participants to alternate between attending the full Standard First Aid course, followed by the recertification course every two years. *Registration ends 1 day prior to start date.

Standard First Aid with CPR C Recertification (LSS)

This is a one-day recertification course for participants who already hold the Lifesaving Society Standard First Aid certification. Individuals who hold a first aid certification through another agency (St. John, Red Cross, Can Ski Patrol) must register for the FULL two-day Lifesaving Society Standard First Aid course. Certification cannot be expired beyond three years from original certification date to attend a recertification course. This recertification course covers a broad spectrum of first aid treatments for medical emergencies and injuries. This course will also cover situation management, use of bystanders, and legal implications. Participants will also perform CPR and choking procedures for Infant, Child and Adult. *Registration ends 1 day prior to start date.

Wilderness Survival & Disaster Prep

Learn how to survive in the wilderness with this course designed for environmental and resource professionals, hikers, skiers, canoeists & outdoor leaders. Topics include trip planning, map & compass, G.P.S., survival & safety kits, outdoor clothing/footwear, gear & what to do skills (survival game plan) if you become lost: shelters, fire building, signaling, safe use of water, food procurement & basics of search & rescue. Course will also cover valuable urban Survival preparedness tips, e.g. types of generators and solar systems etc. Course includes a digital copy of, "501 Survival Skills that Could Save Your Life!". Additional option to attend an overnight Survival Campout. Details, dates and how to join will be provided during the course (approx. $75pp). 1 day course. *Registration ends 1 day prior to start date.
