Rock Climbing Camp | Ages 10-13

Gryphon Camps offers a variety of camps that are categorized into Activity Camps or Sport Camps. Rock Climbing Camp sits within the Activity Camps umbrella.

New Minimum/Maximum Age Requirements

Each camp has a minimum and maximum age requirement to ensure campers are grouped with others within the same age range.  If you have questions or concerns about age requirements, please contact the Gryphon Camps Office at camps@uoguelph.ca or 519-824-4120 Ext. 56131.

  • Minimum Age: Campers must be no younger than the minimum age or be turning that age by the upcoming September 1st. 
  • Maximum Age: Campers must be no older than the maximum age by the end of the calendar year (December 31st).  

Rock Climbing Camp has 2 staff with 16 campers (ratio of 1:8) plus an additional climbing wall monitor during climbing portions of the camp.

Bouldering

Learn specific climbing techniques like how to tie climbing knots, difference between top rope climbing & bouldering, climbing terminology & equipment & injury prevention.

Goals and Challenges

Campers are supported to create individual goals and celebrate those achievements at end of the week through Final Day Challenges like who can get up the highest route

Golden Shoe

The "Golden Shoe" is awarded weekly to the camper that has exemplified 'Being a Gryphon' through supporting others both physically & verbally.  These characteristics include a positive attitude, continually supporting others & accomplishing set goals.

Rock Climbing Camp | Ages 10-13

Our Rock Wall tops out at 40' in height and boasts up to 17 different routes, which allows for lots of room to spread out for climbing.  Small Groups allow campers with same ability to progress at a pace right for them through a mixture of top rope climbing routes with Auto-Belay systems and bouldering routes to strengthen climbing abilities.  While participating on the climbing wall, youth will build confidence in themselves and appreciate the importance of teamwork, safety, setting goals, and supporting others, all skills that transfer into their daily lives.  Throughout each day, campers will participate in outdoor group initiatives that support teamwork.

Learn specific climbing techniques

  • Tie climbing knots
  • Distinguish between top rope climbing & bouldering
  • Become familiar with climbing terminology & equipment
  • Climbing preparation exercises
  • Learn how to warm up
  • Injury prevention
  • Supervised by trained climbing staff who facilitate climbing routes & belay
  • Based on age, campers will learn how to belay

Equipment

  • Climbing harnesses provided for each climber
  • Participants are required to bring their indoor shoes or climbing shoes 
  • Participants can climb in socks, but preference is for climbing shoes or running shoes that are flexible

Rock Climbing Camp will have recreational swimming three times a week.

Rock Climbing Camp - July 8-12/24

At Rock Climbing Camp, campers will build confidence in themselves and appreciate the importance of teamwork, safety, setting goals, and supporting others through bouldering and top rope climbing. The group will learn specific climbing techniques, how to tie climbing knots, and proper warm up, and injury prevention. All campers will be supervised by trained climbing staff who will facilitate their climbing routes and belay. All equipment will be provided for each climber. Campers will have opportunities to participate in other camp activities and recreational swimming. In addition to the Rock Climbing Camp specific programming, campers will participate in general activities that connect to our weekly camp theme. Theme: Shine Bright! Gryphon Vibrant Colour Tournament It’s time to brighten up the campus with our vibrant camp colours. Each camp will have specific team colours and compete in challenges, activities, games that will be part of our Gryphon Vibrant Colour Tournament. All week long we will have colours in everything we do and lots of teamwork.

Theme: Gryphon Olympics This week is the kickoff to the Summer Olympics in Paris, France. So, we’re going to have our own Gryphon Olympics These will not be your usual Olympic sports, as we’ll be putting our Gryphon “twist” on our events!

Theme: Stories Come to Life Hmmmm…..what magical place will camp turn into this week?? We’ll be having a blast with our creative minds while campers participate in games and crafts centered around well known characters, movies, stories. Get ready for a week of imagination!

Theme: Animal Planet Animals can be amazing and this week campers will have fun being animals, zookeepers or imagining that they work for a wildlife magazine or tv show. It will be adventure after adventure as we explore animals from around the world!
