Rec Skating & Hockey

Before booking your Rec time slot, ensure you
have read the below Rec Policies & Protocols
that specifically apply to Skating.

In order to maintain best practices, Recreation options are currently limited since we have implemented a phased approach, visit our COVID-19 website ( for a reference to our Phases so you know when & what to expect.

  • Recreation available to U of G Students & Athletics Members ONLY. You are an Athletics Member if you are a registered full or part-time undergraduate or a full-time graduate student of the University of Guelph (Athletics Base Membership paid within your academic fees) or if you have purchased an Athletics Base Membership.
  • Daily Access Pass currently not available - Monthly Base Membership is great option
  • View weekly Recreation Calendar, hover over the Sports & Clubs menu item above, then click on the Recreation column heading.

Rec Skating

All time slots must be reserved in advance


 Rec Skate is open to skaters of all ability levels, lace up & skate along to some great music.

COVID-19 Policies

  • All time slots must be reserved in advance for the purpose of contact tracing
  • All family members attending Rec Skates will need to be listed - in-person and phone-in requests will not be taken
  • Time slots can be reserved as early as 7 days in advance
  • Time slots will be available to reserve up until the desired start time
  • Rec Skate is free for U of G Students & Members by showing your card to the attendant
  • Everyone must check-in with the Arena Attendant upon arrival
  • Clients are expected to cancel reservations on their own and can do so without penalty up to 1 hour prior to the reserved time
  • Clients who make a reservation and continuously do not show will have their membership temporarily suspended
  • Non-members will be denied access to reserved time slots
  • Limit of 1 time slot per activity, per day. If space permits, clients may request to book a consecutive time slot by checking with staff at that time

Rec Skate COVID-19 Protocols

  • Everyone is required to complete the U of G COVID-19 Screening Form prior to every visit using the QR code or by visiting > or access to the facility will be denied
  • If you experience any symptoms on the screening form or do not feel well, please stay home
  • Everyone must obey physical distancing guidelines while in the facility
  • Users should arrive no earlier than 15 minutes before & no later than 10 minutes after their booked time. Rink doors will be locked at this time – No late entries
  • Socially distanced benches will be available for users to change in and out of skates
  • Face coverings must be worn up until users step onto the ice surface and then placed back on when stepping off the ice surface
  • Open to skaters of all ability levels
  • Use of proper Learn to Skate Aids/Stabilizers/Walkers are permitted
  • Sticks, pucks, strollers, chairs, etc. not permitted
  • CSA approved hockey helmets are strongly recommended for all participants on the ice
  • CSA approved hockey helmets are MANDATORY for children 7yrs & younger
  • All children under the age of 14 must be supervised by Parent/Guardian at all times
  • Excessive speed, dangerous skating or games not permitted
  • Users must recognize and accept the risks inherent in this activity
  • Users are responsible for their own personal health and safety
  • Users must recognize and respect the participation of others and obey directions from Department of Athletics staff
  • Users must respect the safety of attendants - no one is permitted on the ice surface until the Zamboni gate is fully closed
  • Sunflower seeds, tobacco or smokeless tobacco products are not permitted in dressing rooms or facility
  • Report any unusual, suspicious or inappropriate behavior to Facility Staff
  • In case of emergency, contact EMERGENCY SERVICES (519) 840-5000

Facility Guidelines

Athletics is committed to providing a safe, inviting recreation experience for the University of Guelph community. Please assist us by adhering to the following guidelines.

  1. Persons 15 years of age and under participating in Recreation activities must be accompanied by a paying parent or guardian at all times.
  2. Athletic clothing appropriate to the activity must be worn.
  3. Programming space is to be shared appropriately with all participants.
  4. Food or glass bottles are not permitted in the gymnasiums or program rooms.
  5. Inappropriate behavior such as swearing, physical or verbal abuse will not be tolerated and may result in loss of building access privileges and/or immediate removal from facility.
  6. All programming ends 30 minutes prior to the building closing. 
  7. Failure to follow these guidelines may result in removal from facility and/or loss of access privileges.
