Frequently Asked Questions

Am I required to be vaccinated to use the Athletics Facilities?

Gryphon Athletics – Proof of COVID-19 Vaccination Details

Following the recent Province of Ontario announcement requiring proof of vaccination for high-risk, indoor spaces, the University of Guelph, Department of Athletics & Recreation will now require proof of vaccination for all members, program participants, patrons, and permit holders.

The mandatory vaccination requirement comes into effect September 22 (5:30am). As of this date, to access indoor Athletics facilities you must show proof of vaccination with photo ID or have an approved medical note. Facilities include Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre, Field House and Gryphon Centre Arena.

The following information may help you understand what to expect starting September 22 to gain entry to all indoor Athletics and Recreation facilities where sport, fitness and recreation activities take place:

Fully Vaccinated – If you are fully vaccinated (i.e. it has been at least 14 days since you received all required doses of an approved COVID-19 vaccine) you will be required to show proof of vaccination with photo ID to access Athletics indoor facilities, and you need to also comply with all health and safety measures including daily screening.

  • Proof of ID includes:
    • U of G issued student, staff, faculty cards
    • Government issued ID (license or health card)
  • Proof of vaccination includes the vaccination receipt

What to Expect: In order to successfully implement this vaccination mandate you can expect some changes to your routine when entering the facility. A greeter will now be at the entrance of each facility reminding everyone to have their screening form, proof of vaccine and ID. You will need to show this person your daily health screening (green check mark) from the U of G Screening tool. At the swipe station a staff member will verify your proof of vaccination.

    • For students, staff, and faculty who swipe in using their ID card you will only need to show your proof of vaccination one time. Staff will note in our registration system that your proof of vaccination has been validated. Students, staff, and faculty do not need to wait until September 22nd for us to validate your proof of vaccination. Visit Client Services as soon as possible and avoid the lineup.

Exempt – If you have an approved exemption, you will be permitted into Athletics facilities. You must comply with all health and safety measures including daily screening.

Exemptions include:

  • are under 12 years of age;
  • are under 18 years of age, and who are entering the indoor premises of a facility used for sports and recreational fitness activities solely for the purpose of actively participating in an organized sport, in accordance with guidance published by the Ministry of Health on its website for the purposes of this provision;
  • a documented medical reason for not being fully vaccinated against COVID-19 supplied by a physician or registered nurse, including the effective time-period for the medical reason

Not Vaccinated and Not Exempt – If you are not vaccinated and do not have an approved exemption, you are not permitted to access Athletics facilities.

Excused – Individuals who will not be required to show proof of vaccination include the below uses:

  • if you are dropping off a youth or child participant in our programs (facility entry is not permitted – drop off and pick up only)
  • campus tours (daily attestation/vaccination attestation must be completed)
  • to use a washroom
  • to make a retail purchase
  • to place or pick up an order
  • to purchase a membership or register for an activity
  • the necessary purpose of health and safety

We realize that this may pose a challenge for the unvaccinated who registered in a program before this mandate was announced. If you will not be fully vaccinated by the start date of the program, please let us know as soon as possible so that we can process your withdrawal from the program or transfer your registration to a start date later in the program year.

We appreciate your continued patience and understanding during these challenging and ever-changing times. This process will be in effect from Sept. 22nd, until approximately October 22nd when the Province of Ontario is expected to release a province wide, electronic vaccine proof system.
