Gryphon Athletics puts life-saving equipment where it matters most

Guelph, ON (May 19, 2026) - The University of Guelph, Department of Athletics has installed two outdoor, climate-controlled SaveStation® cabinets equipped with life-saving automated external defibrillators (AEDs) at popular Varsity Field and the University’s Soccer Complex. The gold standard in campus cardiac care, the new outdoor AEDs are an extension of the University’s already robust campus cardiac safety program, and gives untrained bystanders 24/7 public access to AEDs for use during sudden cardiac emergencies, protecting students, staff and visitors to the campus.

The outdoor placements were initiated by the Department of Athletics, who are all too familiar with the fact that sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) can happen to people of all ages. In April 2024, a University of Guelph Gryphon men's volleyball player was saved from sudden cardiac arrest during practice due to immediate CPR and prompt use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) by staff and coaches.

"Expanding access to AEDs in our outdoor spaces is a meaningful step toward a safer, more prepared campus community," said interim Director of Athletics, Sarah Mau. "We have been shown first-hand the importance of preparedness, training, and access to life-saving equipment. These SaveStation AEDs will ensure that help is always within reach when it matters most."

This initiative reflects a collaborative effort across campus, bringing together Physical Resources, the Campus Safety Office, and Athletics to enhance public safety infrastructure and ensure the University community is better prepared to respond in critical moments.

In a Cardiac Emergency, Anyone Can Help

Sudden cardiac arrest can strike anyone, at any time. Each year, approximately 7,000 Ontarians and 60,000 Canadians experience cardiac arrest, and up to 85% of cases occur at home or in public places1.

Inside every SaveStation is a defibrillator (AED) that is simple to use and ready when needed. These heated, ventilated, alarmed, monitored and weather-resistant cabinets help ensure the AED inside remains accessible 24/7, year-round. When the cabinet is opened, an alarm sounds and emergency contacts are notified, but it is still critical to call 911 immediately. The AED provides clear voice prompts and visual diagrams to guide users step by step and will only deliver a shock if it detects one is needed.

"If there's a cardiac emergency, call 911, start CPR, and send someone to retrieve an AED," said Deb Hennig, President, Action First Aid. "These three steps can make all the difference."
