Game delays, a leaky arena roof, unscheduled road trips, thrilling come from behind victories…and a Gold Medal!

It was four days that the Gryphons will never forget!

After competitive round robin play the Gryphons finished in second place with a 4-1-1 record, with the stingy Gryphon defence allowing only four goals in the first four games. In the semi-final the Gryphons faced Laurier, who had earlier defeated Guelph in a tight 6-5 contest. Dressed for the 9 am game and ready to go, a leak in the roof at RIM Park just prior to game time caused the contest to be relocated. Organizers worked frantically to find local ice time. Eventually the Gryphons, in full gear, jumped into their vehicles and headed to Albert McCormick Arena for a 10:30 am start.

Laurier scored the first goal less than three minutes into the game. Guelph later countered to tie the contest, but Laurier responded with another two goals. Facing a 3-1 deficit, the Gryphons scored once more, ending the period with Laurier still in the lead. In the final period Guelph scored three straight goals, Laurier scored again, and Guelph finished with two more, including an empty netter with 13 seconds left to defeat the Golden Hawks 7-4, advancing to the final with Brock.

As luck would have it, the gold medal game was also scheduled for the same leaky rink at RIM. Arena staff had temporarily stopped the leak, and it appeared that the game originally scheduled for 1 pm would proceed. However, water again started to flow onto the ice surface and officials again scrambled to find available ice time. This time, the road trip took the Gryphons and Badgers to Elmira for a 4 pm start.

The Badgers scored the first two goals, Guelph responded with one goal, and Brock finished the frame with another score. Once again, the Gryphons faced a 3-1 deficit. In the second period the Gryphons shut down the Brock offence, dominating the rest of the game, scoring four straight goals, winning 5-3. The Gryphons return to Guelph with the Gold Medal, the University Provincial Championship banner, and unforgettable memories!
