Gryphons Go Green

The Guelph Gryphons are ‘Going Green’ to help do our part towards establishing a sustainable future in fitness. Not only is it important to take care of our bodies - but also our planet!

By reducing electricity from, treadmills and cardio equipment, lights, TV’s electricity, we can collectively make a big difference in our community, and create a new standard for a more sustainable gym environment. We encourage fitness centre users to wear green and help make a difference.

Recently funding of $9.5 million was awarded to upgrade Central Utilities, and the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre is one of seven buildings that will be connected to the stack heat recovery system. We will use otherwise wasted heat that would normally be lost through the exhaust, to heat water that will be pumped to the complex to both help to heat the building and to heat domestic hot water. This measure will increase the efficiency of our boilers and save 3200 tonnes per year of Greenhouse Gas production, the equivalent benefit of 83,000 trees.

The  new Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre is on track for LEEDs (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) Silver registration certification by incorporating the following:
  • Urban Development densification (not building on greenfield)
  • Adaptive re-use of existing facility (inherent value and green practice to not build new)
  • Transportation access
  • Bicycle storage and changing rooms to encourage non-auto transit
  • White reflective roof to reduce heat gain and reduce local heat island effect
  • White reflective paving to reduce heat gain and reduce local heat island effect
  • Landscaping designed to eliminate need for irrigation systems
  • Low flow water fixtures like low flush toilets and low flow faucets & shower heads
  • Optimized energy performance on mechanical systems
  • Enhanced commissioning practices
  • Enhanced refrigeration management programs
  • Measurement and Verification of energy consumption
  • Employed a construction waste management program to divert waste from landfill
  • Recycled content in building materials
  • Regional content in building materials
  • Program to enhance indoor air quality including low VOC materials
  • Enhance recycling program
  • Green housekeeping program
  • Efficient lighting design with sensors & LED lighting
